Graphic Packaging are celebrating winning two prizes at the prestigious WorldStar Global Packaging Awards.

The paperboard consumer packaging leader received awards for its collaborations with Coca-Cola’s bottler in the northeast USA, Liberty Coca-Cola Beverages, and Salzburg Schokolade, the traditional Austrian confectionery manufacturer. Hosted by the World Packaging Organisation, the awards recognize the best of the best in the packaging industry, as entrants must first win a recognized national award to qualify for entry.

 

KeelClip™ for Liberty Coca-Cola Beverages

The innovative KeelClip™ solution developed for Liberty Coca-Cola Beverages was tailored to meet the customer’s precise needs, helping them reduce the amount of plastic in its portfolio in line with Coca-Cola’s ambitious ‘World Without Waste’ goals.

Salzburg Shokolade Holiday Kugel confectionery packaging

Developed by our Polish team, these innovative bespoke confectionery gift boxes combine striking aesthetics with product protection benefits thanks to a round, two-piece telescoping base and lid design. A vivid geometric printed design, matt varnish, and gold foil stamping give the pack a premium look and feel befitting the luxurious Mozartkugeln confectionery inside.

Graphic Packaging wins 47 awards for product innovation and corporate and leadership excellence. For Graphic Packaging, 2023 has been a year to remember, as the fiber-based consumer packaging innovator scooped a record-breaking 47 awards for product innovation and corporate and leadership excellence. 

Awarded by institutions including NewsweekFast CompanyFortune, and Institutional Investor, the accolades for corporate excellence recognized achievements for innovation, ESG, investment value, information technology, talent acquisition, and more.  

President and CEO Michael Doss was recognized by Fastmarkets with the Forest Products North American CEO of the Year award, due to his vision, strategic leadership, and dedication to the company and the industry. In addition, Steve Scherger, EVP and CFO, was named CFO of the Year by the Atlanta Business Chronicle in the Large Public Company category. 

Fiber-based consumer packaging innovation 

Consumer packaging innovation across all sectors was recognized, with 40 individual awards received across 16 national and international award schemes. The stand-out success of 2023 was undoubtedly Boardio™, the recyclable, fiber-based canister that offers an alternative to rigid plastic containers. It won eight awards – seven of which were thanks to the company’s collaboration with confectionery giant Perfetti Van Melle for its Mentos brand of gum. This first-to-market paperboard bottle in the gum category offers a more than 80 percent reduction in plastic use versus a rigid plastic tub, with no loss of structural integrity or barrier performance 

It’s no surprise that many of Boardio’s awards were in the Sustainability category, something the team behind its development is immensely proud of. One award of note is the Leadership in Sustainability Award for the Circular Value Chain by the American Forest & Paper Association (AF&PA). This highly prized award recognizes exemplary sustainability initiatives in the paper and wood products manufacturing industry. 

Many more of the awards received this year are for products that help customers with their goal of reducing the reliance on plastic in their packaging portfolio. Unilever’s innovative fiber-based, child-proof carton for laundry detergent capsules won both a PAC Global award and a Paperboard Packaging Competition award and is another innovation the company is rightly proud of. This development alone will prevent over 6,000 tonnes of plastic from entering the waste stream every year.

Graphic Packaging wins its 47th award at the World Beverage Innovation Awards. Graphic Packaging’s successful 2023 shows no signs of stopping as the fiber-based consumer packaging leader wins its 47th award at the World Beverage Innovation Awards. 

Its partnership with Brazilian start-up Take and Go Comercio de Bebidas Ltd (Take) resulted in the winning fiber-based clip-style multipack for bottled beverages, which took home gold in the Best Packaging Innovation category. This unique innovation is a bespoke design developed specifically for Take’s autonomous vending fridges that take payment automatically via a linked app as soon as the consumer removes a pack from the fridge. 

“The opportunity to work on such a novel project is its own reward,” said Doug Hicks, Vice President & General Manager, Packaging Machinery Division & Graphic Packaging International do Brasil. “Nonetheless, we are delighted that our efforts have been recognized by the panel of experts at the World Beverage Innovation Awards. 

“We want to thank our partners at Take and our visionary Brazilian beverage team for their creativity, collaboration, and drive to turn this futuristic concept into an exceptionally convenient experience that Brazilian consumers can enjoy.” 

The clip-style solution features apertures that reveal the bottle caps poking through the top of the pack, which ensures the smart fridge technology can read the bottles to charge the consumer the correct amount. It also means consumers can simply grab a product from the fridge and walk away, having enjoyed a frictionless shopping experience. 

In addition, the multi-award-winning KeelClip™ multipack for Liberty Coca-Cola Beverages was named a finalist in the Best Environmentally Friendly Packaging category, while the unique beer multipack solution for Dutch brewer Oedipus, Mannenliefde secured finalist status in the Best Packaging Design category.

Grocer-Awards-2023Graphic Packaging International’s consumer packaging expertise took the spotlight this week in the West End of London with a triple success at The Grocer New Product & Packaging Awards.

The fiber-based packaging leader won gold and silver awards in the Sustainable Pack of the Year – Recyclability category, while its innovative Boardio™ fiber-based canister solution continued its remarkable winning streak with a silver medal in the Paper Pack of the Year category.

The award ceremony, held at the famous Royal Lancaster London Hotel, marked the debut of ten new packaging-focused categories at the Grocer Awards. Graphic Packaging’s success further bolsters its reputation as a trusted leader in the fiber-based consumer packaging sector.

Jean-François Roche, SVP Sales International at Graphic Packaging was elated following the ceremony stating: “The Grocer Awards expanding to recognize packaging proves how important it is to today’s food industry. Sustainable Pack of the Year – Recyclability

Gold Medal: Pressed board vacuum skin steak packs, developed for ABP Food Group and retailer Aldi, that use around 90 percent less plastic when compared to the previous packaging format.

Silver Medal: A flexible paper-based pack for chilled meats based on PaperLite™ technology that contains 90 percent renewable plant-based fiber, developed for Cranswick PLC and retailer Tesco.

Paper Pack of the Year

Silver Medal: the fiber-based Boardio™ canister developed in partnership with Perfetti Van Melle for its Mentos brand of gum.

Graphic Packaging’s paper-based canister innovation, Boardio™, has earned the Leadership in Sustainability Award for the Circular Value Chain by the American Forest & Paper Association (AF&PA). This accolade adds to a series of recognitions Boardio™ has received in Europe and the United States since debuting its pioneering design in 2021.

Boardio™, created in partnership with multinational confectionery manufacturer Perfetti Van Melle, is a first-to-market paperboard bottle in the chewing gum category. The novel packaging was introduced as a recyclable replacement for Mentos’ plastic bottles, offering a reduction in plastic of more than 80 percent compared to the original rigid plastic tub, with no loss of structural integrity or barrier performance.

“Our goal is to improve access everywhere to consumer packaging made from renewable resources,” said Michael P. Doss, Graphic Packaging’s President and CEO. “By helping our customers – and their consumers – transition from plastic, we can make a world of difference for our planet. We’re honored to receive this recognition, thanks to the passion and creativity of our talented team and our customer, Perfetti Van Melle.”

Since the packaging hit the market, Perfetti Van Melle has rolled out several consumer campaigns touting its environmental benefits. Advertising spotlights include videos and street-level marketing in London, with wraps on the exteriors of city buses.

The AF&PA’s Sustainability Awards recognize exemplary sustainability initiatives in the paper and wood products manufacturing industry. The Boardio win augments a list of existing awards for this pack, including a WorldStar Award, Environmental Packaging Award, European Carton Excellence Award and PAC Global Award.

This award tops off a year of sustainability progress for Graphic Packaging. The company achieved its climate goals three years early and, in October, received approval from the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) for new emission reduction goals. It also unveiled a corporate purpose reflecting a commitment to renewable resources for a better planet. Sustainable packaging innovations such as Boardio™ pave the way toward that vision.
